API hosts workshop for invited guests

API – the American Petroleum Institute – hosted an invitation only event Thursday morning in Raleigh for North Carolina leaders. Summary of the event as reported by the News & Observer is linked below.

Speakers tout safety of fracking practices – Local/State – NewsObserver.com.

Keeping this workshop as an invitation only event seems to exacerbate the disconnect between industry and the community at large. It was mentioned several times during the Duke forum in early January that industry has not coordinated with academia, and there were several reports of poor communication between industry and local government (listen to the second part of ‘Game Changer’ from This American Life). Though it sounds like the workshop was informative in terms of communicating industry-developed Best Management Practices, I just have to say that API dropped the ball here on winning the confidence of a weary public in North Carolina that is not familiar with oil and gas industry.
